HAWTHORNE – One of the many positive aspects of state tournament play is that on any given night, any game between two random teams can have the feel of a section final. One of those games took place on Thursday in the most unlikely of environments. Hawthorne Christian has had a breakout season and was hosting its first-ever sectional quarterfinal against Dwight-Englewood, a team it edged out earlier this season. Regardless of who won, school history was going to be made as neither team has ever advanced to a section semifinal. With New Jersey’s top-ranked team and national powerhouse St. Anthony looming in the semifinals, this was essentially a championship-like atmosphere and the game went right down to the wire. Wesley Dickinson made a host of big plays down the stretch and Brian Breslin hit two key free-throws as fifth-seeded Dwight-Englewood grabbed a late lead then held on for a 40-38 victory over fourth-seeded Hawthorne Christian Academy in a Non-Public North B quarterfinal in front of a packed house in Hawthorne.
