RIDGEFIELD PARK – With the tying run at second base, one out in the top of the seventh with the heart of Cresskill’s order coming to bat, the Ridgefield Park softball team was just trying to drag itself across the finish line as the Cougars had a legitimate shot to tie the game, if not take the lead. An apparent sacrifice fly had gotten Cresskill to within a single run with its two best sluggers, Jackie Pabon and Dani Peluso, coming up with a chance to do some damage. But before the Cougars knew what hit them, the game was over and Ridgefield Park walked off the field victorious. Julie Rovito snapped a tie in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run blast, which set the stage for the strange ending. On the play where Nikki Cerone appeared to lift a sac fly to make it a one-run game, it was ruled the runner left third base early and was called out, putting an abrupt end to the game and giving Ridgefield Park a 5-3 victory on Tuesday at Ridgefield Park High School. “It was a tough call, but I guess the umpire saw enough of a head start for him to make that call with the game on the line,” said Ridgefield Park head coach Mook Iannacone.
