GLEN ROCK -- By her own admission, Megan Miehe was not having a good game. The Glen Rock forward was struggling at both ends of the court, which meant the Panthers were in a dogfight with Cresskill.
Down the stretch, Miehe found a way to make the plays that counted, however, including a huge steal and a basket as well as two free throws in the final 39.4 seconds that lifted the Rockers to a 40-37 win in the independent matchup.
The victory is a pivotal one for Glen Rock, which improved to 5-1 on the season and added a good win to the ledger when it comes time for the county tournament seeding. Cresskill dropped to 3-3 with a third straight defeat.
Glen Rock retook the lead at 34-33 with 2:07 to go after Miehe collected two straight offensive rebounds and fed Kiera Quinlan for a short jumper. The Cougars answered back with a basket by Colleen Ahearn down low with 1:27 to go.
The teams again traded the lead, with Samantha Gamio scoring on a putback with 1:03 on the clock and Stephanie Durakis putting Cresskill on top with two free throws with 41.6 showing.
The Panthers came down, worked the ball around and took a shot. Ahearn grabbed the rebound to the right of the basket, but Miehe came from behind and stole it, putting in a layup with 39.4 ticks remaining.
“She wasn’t too strong, and she brought it down low,” Miehe said of the rebound, “and I just took it. In the beginning of the game I missed a bunch of layups, so it was good to finally get one to drop.”
A Cresskill miss was rebounded by Miehe, who was fouled with 28.9 left and she dropped in both foul shots for the 40-37 lead. The Cougars had two shots miss, and got the ball off a scramble after the second, but could not get another shot up in the right corner as the horn sounded.
“We’ve had a couple of other games like this, and we lost one of these to Kinnelon (by four in a Christmas tournament final), so it’s good to win this one,” Miehe said.
Both teams struggled in the first half, which ended with the Cougars up by 16-15. Only a trio of three-point field goals by the Panthers allowed them to stay close, as they hit only 5 of 26 shots compared to a 6 for 29 half by Cresskill.
“We couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn,” GR head coach Dave Mosconi stated.
The lead seesawed throughout the
second half, with neither team able to pull away. There were 12 lead changes
and five ties in the contest.
With the score tied at 29 entering the fourth quarter, the Cougars got the
first two buckets, a Durakis layup and a Laura Malmut field goal for a 33-29
lead. Glen Rock kept fighting back, with a Miehe free throw and two Quinlan
baskets.
“I thought they ran out of gas in the end,” Mosconi commented. “I was able to run 10 kids at them, and I know they tried to sub, but it was working better for me.”
Megan Glass had 13 points for Glen Rock, 10 of them in the third quarter, and Quinlan added 10. Miehe had 7 points and 9 rebounds to go along with 3 steals. Glen Rock finished 14 of 54 from the floor and 8 of 10 at the line.
Cresskill shot 15 of 57 on field goals and 7 of 10 on free throws. Ahearn came off the bench to score 11 points and collect 11 rebounds, while Malmut had 12 points and Nicole Barretta pulled down 10 rebounds.
