| Pascack Valley breaks out against rival Pascack Hills | |||||||||||||
The Indians are off to a 1-3 start, they were coming off a mistake filled one-run loss to Bergenfield, and they did not have a senior in the starting lineup when they hosted rival Pascack Hills, a team that has been competitive while undergoing its own restructuring after reaching the state final last year, on Tuesday afternoon. So the last thing that anyone might have expected was a 10-0 Pascack Valley win that lasted just 5 2/3 innings. Corinne Finnamore's RBI single that scored Dani Klemt from second base in the home half of the sixth inning was the last of Pascack Valley's 11 hits and brought the game to its early conclusion. "We basically embarrassed ourselves the other day [against Bergenfield] with mistakes that Pascack Valley is not supposed to make," said PV head coach Craig Nielsen. "That was our last game so I certainly didn't think that we would come out here, score 10 runs and get out of here early against a team like Pascack Hills. I hate to lose, but if that Bergenfield game was the wakeup call and we got it out of the way early and we go from here, then I can live with it."
It
did not take long for Pascack Valley to take control. After Kelly
Bassett, the junior who got the start and the complete game shutout
victory for the Indians, worked around a leadoff double by Brittany
Palish in the top of the first inning, PV got its sticks going
in the bottom of the opening inning. Bischoff was tagged out at the plate on the play to keep the game scoreless momentarily, but Jenny Arcello then busted it open with a hard hit, two-run single into right field. Arcello scored two batters later when a ground ball by Jenna Discepolo was booted on the infield. "We had a bad game last time we played and we couldn't wait to play again to try to make up for that. I think that was probably why we got off to such a good start today," said Arcello, a sophomore who has taken over at third base for PV and had 2 hits, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI from the No. 5 spot in the order.
"I was always a second baseman
when I was younger so I am just really learning how to play third
and it been a big adjustment, but I am getting used to it and
I am getting used to varsity pitching. It's been a lot to learn,
but it has been fun, too."
Pascack Hills did manage to pound out eight hits in its six at bats, but the Cowgirls left nine runners on base and had two others thrown out on the base paths on reckless chances taken while well behind on the scoreboard. Bassett wound up with an eight-hit shutout and struck out four while walking three. "A pitcher can't do it alone
and today my teammates behind me made all of the plays and made
my job a lot easier. We played well today," said Bassett
(2-0), who now has both of PV’s wins this season. "Of
course there is a lot of pressure being a starting pitcher at
Pascack Valley with the pitchers that have been here before, but
I just try to go out there with a positive attitude and hope for
the best." Bischoff, Dana Amato, Arcello
and Finnamore all had two hits for Pascack Valley while Klemt
was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI, a double and two runs scored.
The Indians improved to 2-3 on the season and will get to gauge
just how far it has come when it visits two-time defending champion
Ramapo on Friday afternoon. FOR MORE PHOTOS OF THIS EVENT OR TO BUY A COLLECTOR'S PRINT OF THIS GAME STORY, PLEASE VISIT 4FeetGrafix.com. ![]() |
